Atopic dermatitis is characterised by reduced skin barrier function and skin hydration.1 Skin barrier dysfunction promotes the development and increases the severity of atopic dermatitis.2 Studies have also demonstrated AD is associated with reduced ceramide levels, especially longer-chain ceramides like ceramide 1, and decreased levels of long-chain free fatty acids.1,3-5
