INTRODUCTION

The skin barrier deficiencies of atopic dermatitis (AD) are well-studied, but research is lacking on non-lesional skin with a history of AD. Even when the skin appears non-lesional, skin barrier disruption and subclinical inflammation—characterized by the release of stress-induced inflammatory biomarkers such as interleukin-1α (IL-1α)—may still be present. 1,2 This controlled study aimed to investigate skin barrier differences in a diverse population of subjects both with and without a history of AD and evaluate the efficacy of a ceramide-containing moisturizer (CCM) in normalizing these barrier deficiencies.
