Aim: To explore the potential of a SeS2-based shampoo (SeS2) to prevent relapses of SSD following a corticosteroid/salicylic acid (TCS/SA) treatment.
Methods: After a 2-week treatment with TCS/SA, adult subjects with moderate to severe SSD received either the SeS2-based shampoo or the vehicle for 2 months. Visits took place at baseline, 4 weeks after TCS/SA, and at study end. SSD severity was calculated based on erythema, flakes and pruritus; subjects assessed the maximum severity of pruritus and the presence of flakes, discomfort, pruritus, stinging and burning. Global investigator satisfaction and subject’s appreciation were assessed.
Results: 48 adults participated. 8.0% in the SeS2 and 42.0% in the vehicle group relapsed after 1 month of maintenance, and 16.7% in the SeS2 and 54.2% in the vehicle group after 2 months. First median time-to-relapse in the vehicle group was 56 days; it was not reached for SeS2 (P = .008). After treatment with TCS/SA, 29.2% in the SeS2 and 41.7% in the vehicle group did not report pruritus, it increased to 76.2% with SeS2 and to 57.1% with the vehicle at study end. The clinical benefit of a treatment with TCS/SA was maintained in the SeS2 group, only. Investigators and subjects were highly satisfied with the efficacy of SeS2. Local tolerance of SeS2 was excellent.
Conclusion: SeS2-based shampoo reduces significantly the time-to-relapse of moderate to severe SSD flares. Its tolerance was excellent and highly appreciated by the subjects.
