Our commitments to dermatologists

Sustainability for the planet

Because we are more than conscious that health of the planet goes obviously with health of the skin, L’Oréal Dermatological Beauty as managed to innovate sustainability by increasing formulas’ biodegradability, by encouraging ethical sourcing, by producing sustainably in our factories, for our packaging and leaflets and decreasing packaging weight.

Sourcing

Thanks to a solidarity sourcing program for shea butter in Burkina Faso, a key ingredient of our dermocosmetics products, we were able to improve the working conditions of 36,000 women, secure them a fair return (no middlemen, minimum fair price, pre financing) and mitigate the environmental impact of the harvest.

Since 2016, Centella Asiatica has been sourced sustainably in Madagascar. The initiative is based on greater respect for biodiversity and fair remuneration for the thousands of pickers. With the help of its suppliers and partners, as well as the international NGO Union for Ethical BiaTrade (UEBT), La Roche-Posay has provided training and technical assistance to the pickers, enabling them to increase their harvesting capacity with more environmentally-friendly means.

Products and packaging

L’Oréal Dermatological Beauty is committed to improving the environmental profile of its packaging.
We are striving to reduce the use of plastic by lightening tubes and large formats, offering eco-refills, eco-designed cosmetic tubes made partly from FSC-certified cardboard, and 100% recyclable bottles made from 100% recycled plastic (up from 25% in 2019).

These initiatives have enabled La Roche-Posay, for example, to reduce its packaging intensity (an indicator measuring the quantity of packaging relative to the quantity of formula for a product) by 10% compared to 2019. All our cardboard boxes are also 100% sourced from sustainably managed forests.
  • 1086 tons of virgin plastic saved by La Roche-Posay through the use of recycled plastic between 2019 and 2021.
  • 202 tons of virgin glass saved by La Roche-Posay in 4 years, thanks to the use of recycled glass.
  • 40% recycled plastic will be used in La Roche-Posay packaging in 2025 vs. 20% in 2021.
