Treatment: selenium disulfide based shampoo every other day. Androgenetic alopecia treatment (finasteride).
Control at day 15: great improvement in symptoms since the first days of shampoo use and in scalp appearance (cleaning of adherent and non-adherent scales).
Previous treatment: topical minoxidil. He suffered from contact dermatitis after using it.
Proposed treatment: finasteride 1 mg q.o + dermocosmetic leave-on topical serum containing 1.5% Aminexil and Octopirox daily during 3 months and later three times a week.
Androgenetic alopecia is the most common type of hair loss and it is associated with a high psychological burden, reduced quality of life, poor body image and low self-esteem, particularly in young men.
The severity of quality of life involvement does not always correlate with the severity of alopecia.
Androgenetic alopecia treatment is chronic and requires high patient’s compliance to be effective.
Treatment results usually takes months to start to become apparent and this may be disappointing for patients.
Combination therapies achieved better and faster results than monotherapy.
Standard of care of male androgenetic alopecia usually combines 5 alfa reductase inhibitor and topical minoxidil. The most common side effect of topical minoxidil is irritant contact dermatitis which limits its use.
Dermocosmetic leave-on topical serum containing 1.5% Aminexil and Octopirox has shown a strong anti‐lysyl hydroxylase activity in vitro as well as its benefit in subjects with mild AGA.
A recent published cosmetic, open‐label, observational, international real‐life study reported that the shampoo improves hair loss and hair quality in subjects with mild AGA with an excellent tolerability, a pleasant texture, and a high satisfaction rate.
This clinical case’s results match the published data as the patient was greatly satisfied with the results in terms of hair growth and scalp coverage and the tolerance and cosmetic properties of the shampoo.
The shampoo is a good topical adjuvant therapy for male androgenetic alopecia.
