HAIR LONGEVITY: TRANSLATING AGEING SCIENCE INTO FOLLICULAR PRESERVATION

At IMCAS Paris in 2026, emerging perspectives on hair biology were reframed through the lens of longevity science. Sébastien Thibaut – PhD, Global Scientific & Technology Lead from L’Oréal Research & Innovation introduced a paradigm shift that moves beyond reactive hair loss correction toward proactive follicular preservation — positioning hair longevity as a new frontier in scalp and hair management.

Because follicles have limited regenerative potential (around 25 growth cycles), ageing often appears as shorter cycles and progressive miniaturization (thinner, vellus-like fibers) rather than abrupt “hair loss.” To systematize this, L’Oréal Advanced Research developed a Hair & Scalp Longevity Wheel with nine hallmarks grouped into structural integrity, metabolic function (mitochondria, senescence, microbiome), and signalling responsiveness. For example, age-related collagen reticulation can stiffen perifollicular tissue, promoting fibrosis and contributing to miniaturization.

The symposium also introduced Aminexil Longevity Technology (Aminexil + Niacinamide + Gingerol), designed to act across these domains: Aminexil limits collagen crosslinking/fibrosis, Niacinamide supports mitochondrial energy and reduces inflammatory signalling, and Gingerol helps stabilize HIF‑1 to enhance regenerative signalling and new cycle initiation—aiming to extend the functional lifespan of hair.
